Constraint

An immersive installation exploring cyberbullying and the female experience — where physical space amplifies digital emotion, and the audience becomes both witness and aggressor.

Components

3D Loop Animation

A surrealist 3D character rendered in continuous loop, projected large-scale onto the far gallery wall — the emotional centrepiece of the space, cycling between states of fragility and dissolution.

Sound Visualization

A wearable Arduino device suspended from the rope ceiling generates real-time sound data that responds to visitor proximity — the closer viewers approach, the more the system activates.

Rope Installation

Over 30 metres of red rope criss-cross the gallery ceiling, casting dramatic entangled shadow projections across the walls — physically ensnaring visitors within the logic of the work.

Concept

The four pillars behind SHE

01 — Hypothesis

Physical space amplifies digital emotion

The installation posits that the psychological weight of online harassment can only be truly felt when re-embodied in physical space. Scale, darkness, and enclosure transform abstract data into visceral sensation — what the screen renders weightless, the room makes heavy.

02 — Theme

Cyberbullying and the female experience

Drawing on documented patterns of gendered digital violence, the work centres experiences that are frequently dismissed or made invisible online — giving them a room, a body, and a shadow that cannot be scrolled past or ignored.

03 — Interaction

Audience as both witness and aggressor

The Arduino sensor responds to visitor proximity. As viewers approach, the sound intensifies. This implicates the audience in the dynamics the work depicts — collapsing the comfortable distance between observer and participant, bystander and perpetrator.

04 — Atmosphere

Vibe over opinion

The work does not argue. It creates a field — darkness, red, entanglement — and allows the viewer's body to respond before the mind interprets. Sensation precedes meaning. The exhibition asks visitors to feel first and understand after.

Technical Stack

TouchDesigner

Real-time generative visuals and projection mapping, driving the looping 3D animation across the gallery wall at full scale and resolution.

Arduino

Proximity-sensing circuit embedded in the hanging pendant — audience presence triggers sound visualization changes in real time, implicating viewers in the piece.

3D Animation

Character modelling, rigging, and loop animation built in Cinema 4D, composited with a surrealist visual language and rendered for large-format projection.

"The piece does not explain cyberbullying — it recreates the feeling of being ensnared. The ropes are data. The shadows are what gets left on your body. The audience, by entering, becomes complicit."
